Cynthia Chinasaokwu Onyedinmanasu Amarachukwu Owezuke Echimino ErivoΒ MBE(/ΙΛriΛvoΚ/Β Ι-REE-voh;Β born 8 January 1987) is an English actress, singer, musician, and songwriter. Known for her work on both stage and screen, she is the recipient ofΒ several accolades and one of the few individuals nominated forΒ an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award (EGOT), winning all but the Oscar.
Erivo made herΒ West EndΒ debut in the stage musicalΒ The Umbrellas of CherbourgΒ (2011), and herΒ BroadwayΒ debut as Celie in the musical revival ofΒ The Color PurpleΒ (2015β2017). Erivo's work forΒ The Color PurpleΒ won her theΒ Tony Award for Best Actress in a MusicalΒ andΒ Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, as well as aΒ Daytime Emmy Award.Β
She expanded to films in 2018 with the crime thrillersΒ WidowsΒ andΒ Bad Times at the El Royale. Erivo earned nominations for theΒ Academy Award for Best ActressΒ for portrayingΒ Harriet TubmanΒ inΒ HarrietΒ (2019) andΒ ElphabaΒ inΒ WickedΒ (2024), as well as a nomination forΒ Best Original SongΒ for the song "Stand Up" from the former. On television, Erivo portrayedΒ Holly GibneyΒ in theΒ HBOΒ crime drama miniseriesΒ The OutsiderΒ (2020) andΒ Aretha FranklinΒ inΒ National Geographic's anthology seriesΒ Genius: ArethaΒ (2021); the latter earned her a nomination for theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
