Colin Andrew FirthΒ (born 10 September 1960) is an English actor and producer. He is the recipient ofΒ several accolades, including anΒ Academy Award, twoΒ BAFTA Awards, and aΒ Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for twoΒ Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2011, Firth was appointed aΒ CBEΒ for his services to drama,Β and appeared inΒ TimeΒ magazine'sΒ 100 most influential people in the world.
Identified in the mid-1980s with the "Brit Pack" of rising young British actors,Β he had leading roles inΒ A Month in the CountryΒ (1987),Β Tumbledown(1988) andΒ ValmontΒ (1989). His portrayal ofΒ Mr DarcyΒ in theΒ 1995 television adaptationΒ ofΒ Jane Austen'sΒ Pride and PrejudiceΒ drew widespread attention. It led to roles in more prominent films such asΒ The English PatientΒ (1996),Β Shakespeare in LoveΒ (1998),Β The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), andΒ Love ActuallyΒ (2003). He starred as Mark Darcy in theΒ Bridget JonesΒ film series (2001β2025). Also, he acted in the musical comedyΒ Mamma Mia!Β (2008) andΒ its 2018 sequel.
Firth won theΒ Academy Award for Best ActorΒ for his portrayal ofΒ King George VIΒ in the historical dramaΒ The King's SpeechΒ (2010).Β He was previously Oscar-nominated for his role as a grieving gay man in the romantic dramaΒ A Single Man (2009), which earned him theΒ BAFTA AwardΒ and theΒ Volpi Cup for Best Actor. He subsequently playedΒ secret agentΒ Harry HartΒ inΒ Kingsman: The Secret ServiceΒ (2014) andΒ its 2017 sequel. He also performed in films such asΒ Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyΒ (2011),Β Mary Poppins ReturnsΒ (2018),Β 1917Β (2019),Β The Secret Garden,Β SupernovaΒ (both 2020), andΒ Operation MincemeatΒ (2021). For his roles on television, he receivedΒ Primetime Emmy AwardΒ nominations for his portrayals of Dr.Β Wilhelm StuckartΒ in theΒ BBCΒ filmΒ ConspiracyΒ (2001) andΒ Michael PetersonΒ in theΒ HBO limited seriesΒ The StaircaseΒ (2022).
In 2012, he founded the production company Raindog Films, under which he served as a producer forΒ Eye in the SkyΒ (2015) andΒ LovingΒ (2016). His films have grossed more than $3 billion from 42 releases worldwide.Β Firth has campaigned for the rights of Indigenous people and is a member ofΒ Survival International. He has also campaigned on issues such as asylum seekers, refugees' rights, and the environment. He commissioned and co-authored a scientific paper on differences in brain structure between people with different political orientations.
