CiarΓ‘n HindsΒ (/ΛkΙͺΙrΙn/Β KEER-Ιn;Β born 9 February 1953) is an Irish actor fromΒ Belfast,Β Northern Ireland. Hinds is known for a range of screen and stage roles. He has starred in feature films includingΒ The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her LoverΒ (1989),Β PersuasionΒ (1995),Β Oscar and LucindaΒ (1997),Β Road to PerditionΒ (2002),Β The Sum of All FearsΒ (2002),Β MunichΒ (2005),Β Amazing GraceΒ (2007),Β There Will Be BloodΒ (2007),Β Miss Pettigrew Lives for a DayΒ (2008),Β Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows β Part 2Β (2011),Β Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyΒ (2011),Β SilenceΒ (2016),Β First ManΒ (2018) andΒ BelfastΒ (2021), the last of which earned himΒ OscarΒ andΒ BAFTAΒ nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
Known for his distinctively deep voice, Hinds is also known for his voice role as Grand Pabbie, the Troll King, in the animated filmsΒ FrozenΒ (2013) and Β Frozen IIΒ (2019). He played General Zakharow inΒ Red SparrowΒ (2018). He also portrayedΒ SteppenwolfΒ inΒ Zack Snyder'sΒ Justice LeagueΒ (2017) and its 2021Β director's cut.Β
His television roles includeΒ Julius CaesarΒ in the seriesΒ Rome, DCI James Langton inΒ Above Suspicion,Β Mance RayderΒ inΒ Game of Thrones,Β and CaptainΒ Sir John FranklinΒ inΒ The Terror. In addition, Hinds appeared in season 3 ofΒ Shetland (2016), produced by ITV.
As a stage actor, Hinds has spent periods with theΒ Royal Shakespeare CompanyΒ and theΒ Royal National Theatre, and six seasons withΒ Glasgow Citizens' Theatre. Hinds has continued to work on stage throughout his career. In 2020, he was ranked 31st onΒ The Irish Times list of Ireland's greatest film actors.
