Christopher Carl CarterΒ (born October 13, 1956) is an American television and film producer, director and writer. Born inΒ Bellflower, California, Carter graduated with a degree in journalism fromΒ California State University, Long Beach, before spending thirteen years working forΒ Surfing Magazine. After beginning his television career working on television films forΒ Walt Disney Studios, Carter rose to fame in the 1990s for creating theΒ FoxΒ science fiction supernatural drama seriesΒ The X-Files. The show earned high viewership ratings and eventually enabled Carter to negotiate the creation of future series.
Carter has his own television production company,Β Ten Thirteen Productions, wherein he went on to create three more series for the networkβMillennium, a doomsday-themed series which met with critical approval and low viewer numbers;Β Harsh Realm, which was cancelled after three episodes had aired; andΒ The Lone Gunmen, a spin-off ofΒ The X-FilesΒ which lasted for a single season. Carter's film roles include writing both ofΒ The X-Files'Β cinematic spin-offsβ1998's successfulΒ The X-FilesΒ and the poorly received 2008 follow-upΒ The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the latter of which he also directedβwhile his television credits have earned him several accolades, including eightΒ Primetime Emmy AwardΒ nominations.
