ChloΓ« Stevens SevignyΒ (/ΛsΙvΙni/Β SEV-Ιn-ee; born November 18, 1974) is an American actress. Known for her work inΒ independent films, often appearing in controversial orΒ experimental features, Sevigny has receivedΒ several accolades, including aΒ Golden Globe Award and a nomination for anΒ Academy Award.
After graduating from high school, Sevigny found work as a model and appeared in music videos forΒ Sonic YouthΒ andΒ The Lemonheads, which helped acquire her "it girl" status. In 1995, she made her film debut inΒ Kids and became a prominent performer in the independent film scene throughout the late 1990s, with roles in such films as 1996'sΒ Trees Lounge. SevignyΒ rose to prominenceΒ with her portrayal ofΒ Lana TisdelΒ in the drama filmΒ Boys Don't CryΒ (1999), for which she received a nomination for theΒ Academy Award For Best Supporting Actress.
Throughout the 2000s, Sevigny appeared in supporting parts in numerous independent films, includingΒ American PsychoΒ (2000),Β Demonlover(2002),Β Party MonsterΒ andΒ DogvilleΒ (both 2003), andΒ The Brown BunnyΒ (2004). Her participation in the latter caused considerable controversy due to a scene in which she performed graphic, unsimulatedΒ fellatio. From 2006 to 2011, Sevigny portrayedΒ Nicolette GrantΒ on theΒ HBOΒ seriesΒ Big Love, for which she won a Golden Globe Award forΒ Best Supporting ActressΒ in 2010. She also appeared in mainstream films such asΒ David Fincher'sΒ ZodiacΒ (2007) and starred in numerous television projects, including the British seriesΒ Hit & MissΒ (2012), and had supporting roles inΒ PortlandiaΒ (2013), two seasons ofΒ American Horror Story; and in the Netflix seriesΒ BloodlineΒ (2015β2017) andΒ Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez StoryΒ (2024).Β
Sevigny made her directorial debut in 2016 with the short filmΒ Kitty. Her third film as a director, White Echo, competed for theΒ Short Film Palme d'OrΒ at theΒ 2019 Cannes Film Festival. She also has a career in fashion design concurrent with her acting work. Over the years, herΒ alternative fashion senseΒ has earned her a reputation as aΒ style icon.
