Bruce BeresfordΒ (/ΛbΙrΙͺsfΙrd/; born 16 August 1940) is an Australian film director,Β opera director, screenwriter, and producer. He began his career during theΒ Australian New Wave, and has made more than 30 feature films over a 50-year career, both locally and internationally in the United States. He is a two-timeΒ Academy Award nominee and a four-timeΒ AACTA/AFI Awards winner out of 10 total nominations.
Beresford's films includeΒ Breaker MorantΒ (1980),Β Tender MerciesΒ (1983),Β Crimes of the Heart (1986),Β Driving Miss DaisyΒ (1989) β which won four Oscars includingΒ Best Picture, Black Robe (1991),Β Silent FallΒ (1994),Β Double JeopardyΒ (1999),Β Mao's Last DancerΒ (2009), andΒ Ladies in Black (2018). He was nominated for Academy Awards forΒ Best Adapted ScreenplayΒ forΒ Breaker Morant andΒ Best DirectorΒ forΒ Tender Mercies. He wonΒ AACTA/AFI AwardsΒ βΒ Best DirectionΒ (2) forΒ Don's PartyΒ (1976) andΒ Breaker Morant, andΒ Best ScreenplayΒ (2) forΒ Breaker MorantΒ andΒ The Fringe DwellersΒ (1986).
In addition, four of Beresford's films have been nominated for theΒ Palme d'Or, and four have been nominated for theΒ Golden Bear. He has also been nominated for twoΒ BAFTA Awards, aΒ Golden Globe Award, and aΒ Directors Guild of America Award, and won aΒ Genie Award.
