Bette MidlerΒ (/bΙtΒ ΛmΙͺdlΙr/Β betΒ MID-lΙr;Β born December 1, 1945) is an American actress, comedian, singer, and author.Β Throughout her five-decade career, Midler has receivedΒ numerous accolades, including fourΒ Golden Globe Awards, threeΒ Grammy Awards, threeΒ Primetime Emmy Awards, twoΒ Tony Awards, and aΒ Kennedy Center Honor, in addition to nominations for twoΒ Academy AwardsΒ and aΒ British Academy Film Award.
Born inΒ Honolulu,Β Hawaii, Midler began her professional career in severalΒ off-off-Broadway plays before her engagements inΒ Fiddler on the RoofΒ andΒ SalvationΒ onΒ BroadwayΒ in the late 1960s. She came to prominence in 1970 when she began singing at theΒ Continental Baths. In this localΒ gay bathhouse, she managed to build up a core following. Since 1970, Midler has released 14 studio albums as a solo artist, selling over 30 million records worldwide, and has received four Gold, three Platinum, and three Multi-Platinum albums from the RIAA.Β Many of her songs became chart hits, including her renditions of "The Rose", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Do You Want to Dance", "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", and "From a Distance". She won Grammy Awards forΒ Best New Artist,Β Best Female Pop Vocal PerformanceΒ for "The Rose", andΒ Record of the YearΒ for "Wind Beneath My Wings".
Midler made her starring film debut with the musical dramaΒ The RoseΒ (1979), which won her theΒ Golden Globe Award for Best Actress β Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, as well as nominations for theΒ Academy Award for Best Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, and the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress. She went on to star in numerous films, includingΒ Down and Out in Beverly HillsΒ (1986),Β Ruthless PeopleΒ (1986),Β Outrageous FortuneΒ (1987),Β Big BusinessΒ (1988),Β BeachesΒ (1988),Β Stella (1990),Β Hocus PocusΒ (1993) and itsΒ sequelΒ (2022),Β The First Wives ClubΒ (1996),Β The Stepford WivesΒ (2004),Β Parental GuidanceΒ (2012), andΒ The Addams FamilyΒ (2019) and itsΒ sequel (2021). Midler also had starring roles inΒ For the BoysΒ (1991) andΒ GypsyΒ (1993), winning two additional Golden Globe Awards for these films and receiving a second Academy Award nomination for the former.
Midler held a residency atΒ Caesars PalaceΒ in Las Vegas with the showΒ Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go OnΒ from 2008 to 2010. She starred in theΒ BroadwayΒ revival ofΒ Hello, Dolly!, which began previews in March 2017 and premiered at theΒ Shubert TheatreΒ in April 2017. The show was her first leading role in a Broadway musical.Β Midler received theΒ Tony Award for Best Actress in a MusicalΒ for her performance.
