Annette Carol BeningΒ (born May 29, 1958) is an American actress. With a career spanning over four decades, she is known forΒ her versatile work across screen and stage. Bening has receivedΒ numerous accolades, including aΒ BAFTA Award, twoΒ Screen Actors Guild AwardsΒ and twoΒ Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for fiveΒ Academy Awards, twoΒ Tony Awards, and aΒ Primetime Emmy Award, making her one of the few artists nominated for theΒ Triple Crown of Acting without winning.
A graduate ofΒ San Francisco State UniversityΒ and theΒ American Conservatory Theater, Bening started her career on stage with theΒ Colorado Shakespeare FestivalΒ company in 1980, and playedΒ Lady MacbethΒ in 1984 at theΒ American Conservatory Theater. She made herΒ Broadway debut in theΒ Tina HoweΒ playΒ Coastal Disturbances (1987), for which she received a nomination for theΒ Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. Making her film debut in 1988, she gained further recognition for her role inΒ The GriftersΒ (1990), for which she received her first Academy Award nomination. This acclaim continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s with further Oscar-nominated performances in the comedy-dramasΒ American BeautyΒ (1999) andΒ Being JuliaΒ (2004), which respectively won her theΒ BAFTAΒ andΒ Golden Globe for Best Actress. Bening's performance as theΒ title characterΒ in the British television filmΒ Mrs. Harris (2005) earned her a nomination for theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie.
In the following decades, Bening received two additional Oscar nominations for her leading roles as aΒ lesbian motherΒ inΒ The Kids Are All RightΒ (2010) and swimmerΒ Diana NyadΒ in theΒ Netflix biographical filmΒ NyadΒ (2023), the former of which also won her a Golden Globe. She returned to Broadway in the revival ofΒ Arthur Miller'sΒ All My SonsΒ (2019), earning another Tony nomination forΒ Best Actress in a Play. Her other roles during this period include the filmsΒ 20th Century Women (2016),Β Film Stars Don't Die in LiverpoolΒ (2017),Β Captain MarvelΒ (2019), andΒ Death on the Nile (2022), and the miniseriesΒ Apples Never FallΒ (2024).
