Biography

Andrew "Drew" Leung is a Los Angeles–based concept designer, filmmaker, and matte painter whose expansive career spans major Hollywood productions and animated documentary filmmaking. He began his career in the film industry as a matte painter onΒ Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, later transitioning into visual effects and animation, with credits onΒ Pushing Daisies,Β The Twilight Saga: New Moon,Β Avatar, andΒ Team America: World Police. This experience laid a strong foundation for subsequent roles in feature animation at Blue Sky Studios, where he worked onΒ Horton Hears a Who!,Β Ice Age: The Meltdown, andΒ Rio.

Leung earned recognition as a concept artist on live-action films starting withΒ Real SteelΒ andΒ Sucker Punch, steadily building his portfolio to include prestigious titles such asΒ Iron Man 3,Β Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,Β Captain America: Civil War,Β Spider‑Man: Homecoming,Β Mulan,Β The Lion KingΒ (live‑action),Β Black Panther,Β Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,Β The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,Β Wakanda Forever, andΒ Skeleton Crew: A Star Wars Story. He is also the director and producer of the animated short documentary The Chemical Factory, which explores the Chinese Cultural Revolution and anti-Asian violence. The film won Best Animated Film at Doc LA 2021 and the 2022 Socially Relevant Film Festival in New York.

Leung's excellence has been recognised with numerous awards and accolades. He received Certificates of Appreciation from the Art Directors Guild for his work onΒ La La LandΒ andΒ Black Panther. His environmental keyframe titled "Battle Scene" forΒ MulanΒ earned Best Environment Art at the 2021 Lightbox Expo Concept Art Awards.

Beyond his professional work, Leung is a lecturer in digital rendering and concept design at the UCLA School of Theatre, Film, and Television, with guest lectures at institutions such as AFI and California State University, Fullerton. He holds a BFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Production Design branch.
