Rosalie Anderson MacDowellΒ (born April 21, 1958) is an American actress and former fashion model. MacDowell is known for her starring film roles in romantic comedies and dramas. She has modelled forΒ Calvin KleinΒ and has been a spokeswoman forΒ L'OrΓ©alΒ since 1986.
Her early films includeΒ Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the ApesΒ (1984) and theΒ Brat PackΒ vehicle filmΒ St. Elmo's FireΒ (1985). Her breakout role was inΒ Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), which earned her theΒ Independent Spirit Award for Best Female LeadΒ and a Β Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress β Motion Picture Drama. She then starred in a series of films, includingΒ Green CardΒ (1990),Β Groundhog DayΒ (1993),Β Short CutsΒ (1993),Β Four Weddings and a FuneralΒ (1994),Β Unstrung HeroesΒ (1995),Β MichaelΒ (1996),Β MultiplicityΒ (1996), andΒ The Muse (1999).
MacDowell played supporting film roles inΒ Beauty ShopΒ (2005),Β FootlooseΒ (2011),Β Magic Mike XXL(2015),Β The Last LaughΒ (2019),Β Ready or Not (2019),Β The Other ZoeyΒ (2024) andΒ Red Right HandΒ (2024). She starred in several independent films, most notablyΒ Love After Love (2017).Β She co-starred opposite her daughter, Margaret Qualley, in theΒ NetflixΒ miniseriesΒ Maid (2021), for which she was nominated for aΒ Golden Globe Award. In 2023, MacDowell began starring in theΒ Hallmark ChannelΒ fantasy drama seriesΒ The Way Home.
