Amy Marie MadiganΒ (born September 11, 1950)Β is an American actress. She has acted on stage and screen, and has received aΒ Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, as well as nominations for anΒ Emmy Award. She has been married to actorΒ Ed HarrisΒ since 1983.Β
Madigan made her film debut in the dramaΒ Love ChildΒ (1982), for which she was nominated for theΒ Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year β Actress. For playing a woman in a difficult marriage in the drama filmΒ Twice in a LifetimeΒ (1985), she earned a nomination for theΒ Academy AwardΒ andΒ Golden Globe AwardΒ for Best Supporting Actress. She has also acted inΒ Love LettersΒ (1984),Β Alamo BayΒ (1985),Β Nowhere to HideΒ (1987),Β Uncle Buck (1989),Β Field of DreamsΒ (1989),Β Female PerversionsΒ (1996),Β PollockΒ (2000), andΒ Gone Baby GoneΒ (2007). After a lack of "meaningful roles", she gained newfound attention for her performance in theΒ horror filmΒ WeaponsΒ (2025).
On television, Madigan portrayedΒ Sarah WeddingtonΒ in the television filmΒ Roe vs. Wade (1989), for which she won theΒ Golden Globe AwardΒ and was nominated for aΒ Primetime Emmy Award. She also took roles in theΒ HBOΒ seriesΒ CarnivΓ leΒ (2003β2005),Β Grey's AnatomyΒ (2008β2009), andΒ FringeΒ (2009). On stage, she has acted in theΒ Off-BroadwayΒ production ofΒ The Lucky SpotΒ (1987), for which she was nominated for theΒ Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play, and a 1992Β BroadwayΒ production ofΒ A Streetcar Named DesireΒ in the role of Stella Kowalski.
