Alejandro GonzΓ‘lez IΓ±Γ‘rrituΒ is a Mexican filmmaker. He is primarily known for making modernΒ psychological dramaΒ films about theΒ human condition. His projects have garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including fiveΒ Academy Awards, Β Special Achievement Awards,Β Golden Globe Awards, Β BAFTA Awards, and Β Directors Guild of America Awards. His most notable films includeΒ Amores PerrosΒ (2000),Β 21 GramsΒ (2003),Β Babel (2006),Β BiutifulΒ (2010),Β BirdmanΒ (2014),Β The RevenantΒ (2015), andΒ BardoΒ (2022).
Amores PerrosΒ (2000), andΒ BiutifulΒ (2010) each received nominations for theΒ Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. He earned critical and commercial success for his filmsΒ 21 Grams(2003) andΒ BabelΒ (2006). ForΒ BirdmanΒ (2014), he won three Academy Awards forΒ Best Picture,Β Best Director, andΒ Best Original Screenplay. The following year, he was awarded Best Director forΒ The RevenantΒ (2015), making him the third director to win back-to-back afterΒ John FordΒ andΒ Joseph L. Mankiewicz. In 2019, IΓ±Γ‘rritu became the first Latin American to serve as jury president for theΒ 72nd Cannes Film Festival. IΓ±Γ‘rritu and Mexican filmmakersΒ Alfonso CuarΓ³nΒ andΒ Guillermo del ToroΒ are known in the film industry as "The Three Amigos."
