Adam McKayΒ (born April 17, 1968) is an American screenwriter, producer, and director. McKay began his career as aΒ head writerΒ for theΒ NBCΒ sketch comedyΒ showΒ Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 1995 to 2001. After leavingΒ SNL, McKay collaborated with comedianΒ Will FerrellΒ on his comedy filmsΒ Anchorman: The Legend of Ron BurgundyΒ (2004),Β Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky BobbyΒ (2006), andΒ The Other GuysΒ (2010). Ferrell and McKay later co-wrote and co-produced numerousΒ television series and films, with McKay himself co-producing their website, Funny or Die, through their company,Β Gary Sanchez Productions.
Aside from working with Ferrell, McKay wrote and directed the satirical filmsΒ The Big ShortΒ (2015),Β ViceΒ (2018), andΒ Don't Look UpΒ (2021). McKay won anΒ Academy Award, aΒ BAFTA, and aΒ Critics' Choice AwardΒ for adapting the screenplay ofΒ The Big Short.Β In 2019, McKay founded Hyperobject Industries, a production company.
